Diligence

Complete the handoff that makes a finding reproducible.

Readiness to sustain due care in worthwhile effort.

Diligence gives sustained attention to the unglamorous work that makes a claim usable by someone else. In security work, discovery is only part of the task. Conditions, versions, expected behavior, observed behavior, and a clean handoff allow another person to verify and repair without guessing what the discoverer happened to remember.

The orange mascot gives a sanitized icon checklist to a gray teammate who reproduces the result on a second test rig.

Diligence gives care another person can follow without inheriting your memory

The screenshot looks decisive until a teammate tries to reproduce it. Which version? Which account state? Which step came before the visible one? You reopen the notes, remove an irrelevant secret, and complete the conditions and sequence. The second attempt succeeds without a séance for your memory.

Finding the balance in Diligence

One tester hands a teammate a reproducible step card and version token while shredding an irrelevant secret beside the package.

Too little

The heroic screenshot

The picture is dramatic; the rest can be reconstructed later.

A striking result is preserved without the conditions needed to evaluate it.

A fitting response

A reproducible handoff

Record the consequential state, sequence, expectation, and observation.

Care turns a private moment of discovery into inspectable shared work.

Pursued too far

The archival monument

Every keystroke and secret should be retained forever.

Completeness becomes indiscriminate accumulation that obscures the real conditions and creates new exposure.

The handoff tests whether care has left the discoverer’s head and entered the work.

What Diligence makes possible

A teammate can confirm the finding, challenge it, or continue it without reenacting the original investigator. The record also reveals which detail is missing before that gap becomes a dispute.

Diligence in ordinary life

A household repair

Leave the model number, changed part, and remaining symptom for the next person instead of a triumphant photograph.

A shared spreadsheet

Document the input and transformation that produced the total, not every click made while finding it.

Nearby virtues, different work

Exactitude

Exactitude preserves the consequential particulars; Diligence sustains the work of gathering and arranging them for another person.

Patience

Patience keeps an unresolved process open responsibly; Diligence makes each follow-up and result traceable during that time.

Diligence and its counterfeits

Visible busyness

A long activity log substitutes for checking whether the decisive conditions are present.

Memory as method

The discoverer promises to explain the missing steps later and calls the result reproducible now.

How to cultivate Diligence

  1. Ask a teammate which step they would have to guess.

  2. Record the minimum environment and state needed to reproduce the observation.

  3. Remove secrets and personal data that do not belong in the handoff.

Try it today

Document one ordinary task so another person can repeat it without guessing a consequential step.

Questions worth returning to

  • Where would a careful stranger have to invent my missing context?
  • Which retained detail helps reproduction, and which merely creates exposure?

Quotations and further reading

Seven selections to return to through the week. Follow a source link to read the surrounding passage.

  1. Dodd acceded to my request; and having completed his part of the work, I subjected it to a careful revision, and added various details which seemed to be necessary to completeness, at least so far as the narrow limits of a small rudimentary work would admit of completeness.

    A. C. Hobbs, George Dodd, and Charles Tomlinson · Rudimentary Treatise on the Construction of Locks · Preface

Dodd’s draft receives careful revision and only the details necessary to the work’s limited purpose. Diligence is selective completion, not endless expansion.

  2. Hobbs and I then had a meeting, when the additions and corrections were read and discussed, and admitted or rejected as the case might be.

    A. C. Hobbs, George Dodd, and Charles Tomlinson · Rudimentary Treatise on the Construction of Locks · Preface

Additions and corrections are discussed one by one before admission or rejection. The finished work comes from accountable review, not a ceremonial checklist.

  3. The operator was thus enabled, by this record, to commence each morning’s work at the point where he left off on the previous day.

    A. C. Hobbs, George Dodd, and Charles Tomlinson · Rudimentary Treatise on the Construction of Locks · Chapter IX. The Lock Controversy: During And Since The Time Of The Great Exhibition

A daily record lets the operator resume exactly where work stopped. The humble continuity device matters because memory alone would not sustain the task.

  4. A second edition of these twenty-six dictionaries was then made, including these new derivatives.

Charles Babbage · Passages from the Life of a Philosopher · Deciphering

After grammatical derivatives are identified, Babbage makes a second edition of all twenty-six dictionaries. Repetition becomes useful because each pass has a defined object.

  5. Each of these dictionaries was then examined, and every word which contained any two or more letters of the same kind was carefully marked.

Charles Babbage · Passages from the Life of a Philosopher · Deciphering

Repeated letters are carefully marked so later analysis can use them. The small notation earns its place by supporting another person’s reasoning.

  6. The work is yet unfinished, although the classification already amounts, I believe, to nearly half a million words.

Charles Babbage · Passages from the Life of a Philosopher · Deciphering

The half-million-word classification remains unfinished despite substantial labor. Diligence can report incompleteness rather than disguise it as completion.

  7. In order to diminish to the utmost the chances of error in inscribing the numerical data of the problem, they are successively placed on one of the columns of the mill; then, by means of cards arranged for this purpose, these same numbers are caused to arrange themselves on the requisite columns, without the operator having to give his attention to it; so that his undivided mind may be applied to the simple inscription of these same numbers.

Ada King, Countess of Lovelace · Notes on the Analytical Engine · Article XXIX · 1843 English translation of Menabrea with Lovelace’s notes; Project Gutenberg 75107

Lovelace describes arranging data entry to reduce error and free attention for the part only the operator can supply. Care changes the handoff, not merely the workload.
