Syntharity

Keep contradictions visible while building the whole account.

Readiness to seek a whole account faithful to its relevant evidence, without selective omission or forced coherence.

Syntharity asks what account can hold the whole relevant pattern without sanding down the part that resists it. In ethical hacking, the pressure may be intellectual, financial, or reputational: a clean exploit story travels farther than a qualified one. The virtue does not forbid a leading explanation. It keeps that explanation answerable to the evidence that organizes it and the evidence that limits it.

The orange mascot adds one contrary red puzzle piece to a blue evidence board while leaving a bounty coin unopened.

Syntharity gives an explanation that survives the inconvenient clue

The finding qualifies for a larger bounty if four observations tell one dramatic story. Three cooperate. The fourth suggests a narrower cause. The payment page is already open; you leave the fourth observation in the report and let the reward follow the evidence rather than recruit it.

Finding the balance in Syntharity

A bounty reviewer keeps one contrary red puzzle piece beside a nearly complete blue pattern while a payment token waits unopened.

Too little

The profitable story

The contrary result is probably noise, so it need not trouble the claim.

A desired conclusion decides which observations count.

A fitting response

A faithful whole

Three observations support this explanation; the fourth remains unresolved and may narrow it.

The report preserves a useful pattern and the fact that prevents it from becoming total.

Pursued too far

The archive dump

Every captured detail belongs in the main narrative.

Completeness is confused with indiscriminate accumulation, burying the structure a reader needs.

A whole account has a visible seam where the facts have not yet agreed.

What Syntharity makes possible

The owner receives a finding they can investigate without first discovering that its awkward evidence was hidden. The reporter also gains a better question: what condition makes the fourth observation differ?

Syntharity in ordinary life

A purchase comparison

One glowing feature does not erase the recurring defect mentioned in less enthusiastic reviews; the decision includes both.

A team retrospective

A successful release and a costly late correction belong in the same account, even when one complicates the celebration.

Nearby virtues, different work

Exactitude

Exactitude preserves each observation’s conditions and frequency; Syntharity decides how the observations belong—or fail to belong—in one account.

Discernment

Discernment tests what a result warrants; Syntharity keeps rival or resistant results visible while the larger explanation is assembled.

Syntharity and its counterfeits

Narrative polish

A report removes the one fact that interrupts its momentum, mistaking coherence for truth.

Undigested completeness

A report reproduces every log line and calls the pile a whole, leaving the reader unable to see the consequential pattern.

How to cultivate Syntharity

  1. State the leading explanation in one sentence, then name the strongest observation against it.

  2. Separate relevant contradiction from irrelevant detail by asking what could change the conclusion.

  3. Let payment, praise, or elegance wait until the account includes its limiting fact.

Try it today

Take a harmless conclusion you are drafting and add the strongest relevant fact it has not yet explained.

Questions worth returning to

  • What would a skeptical reader need to see beside this pattern?
  • Am I calling a fact irrelevant because it truly is—or because it changes the story?

Quotations and further reading

Seven selections to return to through the week. Follow a source link to read the surrounding passage.

  1. It will be a curious circumstance in the history of science, if an erroneous explanation of new and singular experiments in one department should have led to the prevision of another similar set of facts in a different department, and even to the explanation of new facts at first apparently contradicting it.

Charles Babbage · Passages from the Life of a Philosopher · Explanation of the Cause of Magnetic and Electric Rotations

Babbage notices that an explanation may be wrong in one setting yet still reveal a related fact elsewhere; the passage resists the tidy choice between total success and total failure.

  2. But which of these is correct can only be determined by the fresh information which we shall no doubt find waiting for us.

Arthur Conan Doyle · The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes · Xii. The Adventure Of The Copper Beeches

Holmes says fresh information must decide among several explanations that fit the known facts. A whole account remains revisable instead of hiding its unresolved alternatives.

  3. I therefore went over with my wheels to the artist who had formed the teeth, in order that I might arrive at some explanation of this extraordinary contradiction.

Charles Babbage · Passages from the Life of a Philosopher · Chapter V. Difference Engine No. 1

An “extraordinary contradiction” sends Babbage back to the physical wheels. The contradiction is not edited out; it becomes the part of the whole that demands explanation.

  4. After very carefully going over the whole of the examination-papers again, I arrived almost exactly at my former conclusion.

Charles Babbage · Passages from the Life of a Philosopher · Chapter IV. Cambridge

Rechecking the entire set of papers returns Babbage to nearly the same conclusion. The whole review matters because agreement after reconsideration is stronger than selective confirmation.

  5. They are generally very instructive, and sometimes bring together isolated facts in the science which, though insignificant when separate, mutually illustrate each other, and ultimately lead to important conclusions.

Charles Babbage · Reflections on the Decline of Science in England · Chapter III. General State Of Learned Societies In England

Babbage describes isolated facts becoming mutually illuminating. The point is not accumulation but the structure that appears when relevant pieces are considered together.

  6. The story has, I believe, been told more than once in the newspapers, but, like all such narratives, its effect is much less striking when set forth en bloc in a single half-column of print than when the facts slowly evolve before your own eyes, and the mystery clears gradually away as each new discovery furnishes a step which leads on to the complete truth.

Arthur Conan Doyle · The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes · Ix. The Adventure Of The Engineer’S Thumb

Watson contrasts a compressed newspaper account with facts that unfold step by step. A whole account preserves the sequence by which the apparent mystery changes shape.

  7. It is singular that this addition to human knowledge should have been made just about the period when it was beginning to be felt by those most eminently skilled in analysis that the time has arrived when many of its conclusions rested only on probable evidence.

Charles Babbage · Passages from the Life of a Philosopher · Chapter IX. Of The Mechanical Notation

Babbage distinguishes probable evidence from demonstration. The distinction keeps the larger claim from becoming smoother than the support beneath it.
