Noble Virtues

Let the welcome, the work and the promise give the code substance.

Nine inherited headings invite a question about belonging: whom do our values serve when reputation, loyalty and another person’s needs pull in different directions? The useful answer appears in a welcome offered, an accurate account, a kept promise or a task carried thoughtfully beyond its first enthusiasm.

This full collection preserves the earlier site’s nine names and precepts. Its explanations, ordinary practices, poems and illustrations are contemporary interpretations. The modern codification, older translated literature and this site’s adaptations have distinct histories.

Give the headings substance

Courage lets a defensible concern enter the conversation; Truth gives the conversation an accurate account. Honor asks that regard rest on worthy conduct, while Fidelity gives a worthwhile commitment continuity. Their tests begin when being admired and doing what is owed come apart.

Discipline, Industriousness and Perseverance give useful effort a shape, attentive work and continuity through difficulty. Hospitality considers the person arriving; Self Reliance keeps room for that person’s agency, including appropriate help. The headings become more illuminating when they question one another than when each merely announces a good quality.

When good intentions pull apart

The good name and the neglected obligation

Honor is most useful when it reminds us to finish what recognition celebrates. Truth may reveal the missing part; Fidelity helps attend to it.

Belonging and a stranger’s place

A group’s loyalty can support welcome or close it. Hospitality and Courage ask whether the stranger’s interests can enter the answer.

A steady method and a changed need

Discipline provides rhythm, Industriousness gives care and Perseverance carries effort through difficulty. Each needs an accurate account of the purpose and its costs.

Where the ideal meets ordinary life

After an admirable announcement

Translate the promise into the next modest action somebody can rely on.

At an ordinary arrival

Notice a practical barrier familiar members no longer see, then offer help with a real choice.

In unfinished useful work

Ask what the obstacle taught you before applying more of the same effort.

A small place to begin

Choose one ordinary situation from a page below. Read its balance comparison and select a manageable action fitted to your circumstances. A completed exercise is an occasion for reflection, rather than a score of moral worth.

The wording and its history

The nine names and earlier-site precepts are preserved as a reference collection. The explanations, exercises, poems and illustrations on these pages are contemporary adaptations. Quotations keep their named literary source, English edition and speaker; they are perspectives to examine rather than commands to adopt.
