Contrarianism

Taking opposition to AI enthusiasm or to AI criticism as evidence of insight in itself.

The group has reconsidered. He is reconsidering which side to oppose.

A habitual preference for opposing a prevailing view that gives opposition itself greater weight than relevant reasons warrant.

Evidence-based skepticism, dissent and unconventional views differ.

A raccoon sits backward on a chair while an orange colleague turns a sign with opposing arrows.

How it takes hold

The conversation turns toward enthusiasm, so the objection becomes certain. Later the same group grows skeptical, and certainty changes sides. The apparent independence depends closely on knowing which position is currently receiving approval.

Contrarianism gives opposition itself more weight than reasons warrant. In AI debates it can imitate critical thought from either direction: every celebrated capability must be trivial, or every criticism must be sentimental obstruction. The conclusion is selected for its contrast before its evidence is considered.

Discussion becomes an exercise in supplying positions for someone to negate. Genuine objections can lose force when they appear interchangeable with the need to remain contrary.

Finding the distinction

Illustrative situation: a group revises its judgment after new evidence.

Too contrary: the dissenter switches sides to preserve opposition.

Fitting: each person weighs the new evidence, whether agreement follows or not.

Overcorrection: disagreement is suppressed to maintain a pleasant consensus.

Courage can defend an unpopular position for good reasons. Contrarianism needs the unpopularity to do part of the argumentative work. Cynicism specifically presumes base motives; contrarianism can oppose without making any claim about motives.

Unconventional ideas, minority views and forceful disagreement can contribute substantially. Agreement is no more virtuous by itself than dissent.

Counterfeit of Courage: An audience member opposes each emerging consensus to appear independent. Genuine Courage can sustain agreement or disagreement for defensible reasons.

A response that restores something

An independent judgment can state its reasons without making the audience's position its main evidence. It can also acknowledge where an opponent has identified a real benefit or difficulty.

A worthwhile objection becomes more useful when it specifies the claim, the missing support and what would count as an answer. Blanket disbelief offers less to examine.

Intellectual freedom includes being free to agree. A conclusion need not become less defensible because someone fashionable arrived there first.
