Capability Worship

Treating the ability to automate, infer, imitate or intervene as sufficient permission to do so.

The new button can open every drawer. That seems to have settled whether it should.

Habitually treating possession of a capability as sufficient justification for exercising it.

Capability can support a worthwhile project; feasibility alone does not settle justification.

A raccoon presses a remote beside open drawers while an orange colleague holds a small box close.

How it takes hold

A system can infer something private or imitate someone convincingly. The demonstration is greeted as an answer to whether it should be used. The reasons needed for permission have been replaced by admiration of the ability.

Capability Worship habitually treats possessing a capability as sufficient justification for exercising it. It can occur in ordinary technical enthusiasm as well as grand ambitions. The distinctive step moves from can to may without giving other people's claims or the purpose an independent hearing.

People affected by an intervention can be treated as raw material for a demonstration. An impressive result then makes the missing justification harder to discuss, because objection appears to deny the achievement.

Finding the distinction

Illustrative situation: a tool can open every compartment in a shared workspace.

Too capability-driven: access is exercised because it exists.

Fitting: permission and purpose govern which compartments are opened.

Overcorrection: the capability itself is condemned regardless of possible legitimate uses.

Recklessness discounts foreseeable significant consequences. Capability Worship can see those consequences accurately and still regard power as its own license. Metric Worship gives a numerical proxy governing authority; capability need not be measured to be worshipped.

A powerful tool can serve a defensible purpose. Admiration, curiosity and ambitious invention are not themselves permissions or defects.

Counterfeit of Courage: An intrusive demonstration is praised as bold because it can be attempted. Genuine Courage needs a defensible end, not simply an impressive risk.

A response that restores something

A responsible proposal explains the purpose, the affected claims and why this use is justified. Consent, proportionate limits and alternatives may matter independently of technical success.

A demonstration can be bounded so that the capability is examined without imposing its full effects on others. What can be shown responsibly may be narrower than what can be built.

Practical judgment values ability without treating it as sovereign. A capability can remain a real achievement even where a proposed use deserves refusal.
