Metric Worship

Treating engagement, benchmark position, productivity or a personal score as more authoritative than the worthwhile purpose it should serve.

The reading score has doubled. Nobody has turned a page.

Habitually treating a numerical indicator as more authoritative than the worthwhile purpose it is meant to serve.

Measurement and optimization can help when their limits remain answerable to the purpose.

A raccoon measures a stack of closed books while an orange colleague reads an open one.

How it takes hold

The target was introduced to help evaluate useful work. Gradually the work is reorganized to make the target look good, even where the change defeats the reason for measuring. The indicator keeps its precision while losing its fitting authority.

Metric Worship habitually gives a numerical proxy more authority than the worthwhile purpose it should serve. AI-related examples include treating benchmark position as a complete account of suitability, engagement as a measure of information or productivity counts as a measure of meaningful contribution.

People can become visible only through the features a score records. Uncounted needs and valuable work disappear from decisions even when everyone agrees, in principle, that they matter.

Finding the distinction

Illustrative situation: a reading initiative counts completed summaries.

Too score-driven: volume is rewarded while understanding goes unexamined.

Fitting: the measure informs an assessment of actual learning.

Overcorrection: every numerical observation is rejected as an enemy of human value.

Capability Worship treats ability as permission; Metric Worship treats a proxy as governing value. Greed can pursue a score for advantage, but the metric-worshipper can sincerely regard the score as the purpose.

Measurement, targets and optimization can clarify important questions. The defect is not arithmetic; it is allowing arithmetic to settle questions its indicator does not capture.

Counterfeit of Integrity: A team claims fidelity to learning because its summary count is rising. Genuine Integrity keeps the indicator answerable to the educational end.

A response that restores something

A useful metric has an intelligible relationship to a purpose and visible limits. The account should say what the indicator leaves out and what evidence can overrule it.

Evaluation can combine quantitative results with relevant cases, informed explanation and the experience of affected people. These contributions need reasons, not immunity from scrutiny.

Discernment allows a lower score to accompany a better decision when the difference serves the real end. It can also accept an improved score when that improvement genuinely matters.
